What are the Essential Tools for Gardeners?

You wouldn’t bake a cake without a spoon, bowl or oven would you? Nor would you build a house without a hammer and nails. The same goes for gardening – there are essential tools you need to enable success in the garden. Sure you could dig a hole with your hands or prune branches with your teeth but it would be more effective and efficient (and not to mention easier) if you use the tools created for successful gardening.

Every gardener should think about purchasing the following items to help make their garden into the patch they dream of:

Gardening gloves – protect your hands from the rigors of working in the dirt. A good way to stop bugs and spiders from taking a bite!

Wheelbarrow – save your back and make moving things around the garden more effortless.

Shovel/spade – moving dirt and digging in plants is much easier if you don’t have to use your hands. Invest in a good shovel and you’ll save time and your nails!

Trowel – the much smaller version of a shovel is very useful for planting seedlings and other small planting tasks such as weeding and fertilizing. It may also encourage young children in the garden. A trowel is easy for them to use and they can get involved in these easier gardening jobs.

Pruning shears (or secateurs) - save those teeth! Prune your shrubs and dead-head your flowers with a pair of good quality shears.

Pruning saw – this implement will take care of those jobs that secateurs can’t manage. Some tree branches are just too thick for smaller shears so a pruning saw will be useful for this garden maintenance. The blade should be kept clean and sharp.

Fork – this handy implement will help break up soil and can be used to aerate the lawn.

Pick – a useful tool when the gardening is tough. A pick is great for removing large roots and breaking up stumps and very hard ground.

Rake – metal rakes are preferable and will last longer. Keep your garden clear of leaves and clutter with this essential tool.

Loppers – for reaching high branches, a long-handed cutting implement is a must.

Garden hose – get one long enough to reach all corners of your garden. Make sure you know the hand-watering rules if you live in a drought-stricken area. It’s a good idea to have a reel or rack to store the hose on. It will keep it in better condition, stopping those kinks from forming.

Watering can – for hard to reach plants, a watering can is a must. If your garden is a window box in your apartment, a watering can is a much better option than a hose.

Knife – a useful tool for dividing punnets. This is a cheap implement because an old kitchen knife will do the job.

Garden broom or electric blower – I guess this depends on your budget. Cleaning up after a day in the garden will certainly be made quicker with an electric blower and these are especially useful in the fall when leaves are everywhere.

Of course there are many more types of implements available for the gardener, but those listed above will get you started. With these essential gardening tools you’ll be able to garden more easily, making your time in the garden more enjoyable.
