Tips for Creating a Low Maintenance Garden

For nearly all gardeners, the most time-consuming tasks are watering, weeding and planting. Keeping these three jobs in mind can help you rearrange your gardening habits to have a low maintenance garden – one that you can sit back and enjoy, rather than labor away in continuously.

Watering – most plants should have their roots deep-soaked, but this is a great time-waster. Installing an automatic sprinkler system will alleviate this problem, although it’s not cheap to do. Alternatively, you could install a drip-irrigation system. This involves you turning on the faucet and let it drip away for the amount of time required. Water timers can also be employed to do the watering for you. If you like to garden in containers and pots a simple tip for saving time while watering is to install your pots close to a faucet. For container gardening placing polymer crystals in the pots and containers will save time on watering but will also help in drought-affected areas. These crystals absorb water then release the moisture into the soil as it dries out. The larger the pot, the slower the soil will dry out.

Weeding – that hated task! Can it be made easier and less time consuming? It can with some simple planning in your garden. First, select a good ground cover suited to your area. A ground cover that suppresses weeds is worth its weight in gold. Secondly – mulch! Mulching is one of the best time-saving inventions for the gardener. It saves time and helps in keeping moisture in the soil and it deters weeds. Organic mulch such as bark, leaves and pine needles will decompose and put nutrients back into the soil, keeping it rich and lowering the need for fertilizing. Mulching not only saves time, it saves money. Certainly a great tip for any gardener but especially the one that wants a low maintenance garden.

Plant division and selection – choosing the right plant for your garden will save you a lot of time. It sounds simple but when you put a plant in the sun that prefers shade, you’ve wasted time (and money). Select plants that grow well in your area. You may also be inclined to let them grow naturally, rather than pruning regularly. This is a good idea for shrubs. What about choosing perennials? Hardy perennials don’t take much upkeep and many are disease-resistant. Select types of plants in limited numbers. A mass planting of one type of flower looks much better than one or two of each species. It is also easier for garden design and it means you won’t have to remember a myriad of different requirements for each species. Find plants that don’t need regular division and have easy care instructions.

Reducing your weeding and watering requirements gives you a low maintenance garden. Then select low care plants that grow well in your area. You’ll soon be able to sit back and relax – and enjoy the garden you have created!
