Ideas for Planting a Summer Garden

The summer garden is full of rich scents, wild colors and the heat of day. What plants can you place in the ground to give your garden a wonderful show during summer?

Aromatic plants - Citrus trees will not only give you fruit but refresh the air with the smell of citrus. The brightly colored lemons, limes and oranges add color to your garden as well. Lavender plants are many and varied. Their scent and color will add richness to your yard. Have you considering planting a herb garden? Rubbing basil and thyme will release these plants’ scent into the summer air. Fennel is another interesting herb; it has the smell of licorice. Some shrubs provide wonderful scents such as the Mexican orange and verbena. The Mexican orange shrub, along with moonflowers will give a delightful scent during the summer evenings.

Summer color – Bulbs, yes bulbs, are available for summer flowering. These bulbs (and also tubers, corms and rhizomes) have come from tropical climates and produce some spectacular displays throughout summer. Cannas, elephant ears and lilies will give your garden a striking touch. There are also the many varieties of orchids which fit into this category. Summer is the time when your annuals are in full bloom and roses hit their stride. Roses are perhaps the most well-known flower and many gardeners spend their time cultivating this beautiful garden specimen. Not all roses are scented, but there are many that produce beautiful blooms with exquisite aromas. If it’s a rose garden you want, plant your bushes in late winter, in a position where they will get plenty of sun and watch the beauty unfold in summer.

Shrubs and trees – These are an important part of your summer garden. Some will provide you with blooms, while others will provide the green backdrop to your flower display. Plant what grows well in your zone. Hydrangeas are popular in a lot of areas as are mockoranges which will give off the scent of oranges in the height of summer. The tree lilac, American yellow-wood and Chinese scholar-tree are white-flowering trees that do well in the American northern climate.

Summer vegetables – Plan to have a vegetable garden that will produce a variety of vegetables across the different seasons. The summer vegetable patch requires at least six hours of sun a day. Crops can include: pumpkin, squash, beans, eggplant, cucumbers, peppers, melons and sweet corn.

Water features – Planning a water feature in your garden will be a welcome addition in summer. Apart from its soothing properties, it can provide an oasis from the heat and wonderful place to grow your water lilies.

As always, plan ahead. Think about what pleasures you want from your garden in summer. Enjoy the rich smells and vibrant colors your summer garden will bring.
