Ideas for Planting a Spring Garden
Spring! Some say it’s the best time of the year in the garden. All those beautiful flowers blooming, the air smells sweet and you want to get outside and enjoy it. So how do you make sure that your garden is alive come springtime? How do you get the best blooms that will continue throughout the spring and into the summer? Here are some ideas for your spring garden:
Bulbs – everyone loves the beauty of bulbs and the little mystery of how such stunning flowers come from a hard brown ball that you lay down in the dirt before winter. Bulbs need cool soil to enable them to sprout and bloom beautifully in spring. Your bulbs should be planted in the fall, preferably before the ground freezes. Different bulbous flowers can be planted at various times in the fall. For example crocus and gladiolus can be planted at any time during fall, whereas narcissus should be in the ground as early as possible. Bulbs such as hyacinths and irises do best if planted in October and November, whereas some irises can be planted as early as July. When planting your bulbs you will need to be aware of how deep you should plant them. The bigger the bulb, the further into the soil it should go. Study your bulbs and mass plant a variety if you can. The results in spring will be amazing.
Shrubs – Spring blooming shrubs will add beauty and color to your garden. A number of them have wonderful scents and will enhance any springtime stroll through your yard. Honeysuckle and jasmine shrubs are a good choice in some areas for their lovely scents. Lilacs have beautiful blooms and shrubs from the virburnum family will attract birds to your garden. Some shrubs bloom all year round so will enhance your garden not only in spring. Find out what grows best in your area and what fits in with the style of your garden.
Vegetables in spring – There are plenty of vegetables ready for picking in springtime and a number of them provide color and attractiveness to the garden as well. If you want springtime vegetables you will need to plant them late in winter. Plants for your spring vegetable garden can include peas, salad greens, broccoli, cabbage and onions. And what about radishes? Radishes are great because they add color and can be picked as early as twenty-one days after planting.
So if you want to have a garden full of visual delights, lovely smells and food to eat ready for spring, plan ahead. Go to your local nursery and see what the experts are planting in readiness for springtime in the garden.
