How to Deal with Pests and Rodents in Your Garden
Pests in the garden come in large and small sizes. Essentially they can be formed into two categories – Insects and Rodents.
Insect Pests – There are a number of insect pests in your garden, some more common than others. Most can be treated with pesticides or if you are into organic gardening, a more natural repellant. Here are a few pests you may find in your garden.
1. Aphids harm plants by sucking juice from new shoots. Hose aphids or prune off contaminated plant life. You can use pesticides or insecticidal soaps to kill off the aphids. If you can encourage ladybugs into your garden they will deal with the aphids for you. 2. Wasps and bees can be a danger in the garden. Destroying or removing their nest is the best way to rid your garden of these dangerous insects. 3. Mosquitoes aren’t much fun, especially in the summer when you are enjoying your garden at night. There are natural mosquito repellants, as well as chemical ones. Try lighting a citronella candle or a mosquito coil. Plant citronella plants around water features or pools. 4. Worms and spiders are mostly welcome additions to any garden, but there are some species of both that can be a problem. Spider mites live on the underside of leaves and suck the chlorophyll out. They can be dealt with by using insecticides or horticultural oils. Earthworms are great, but worms and caterpillars that attack your plants are not so welcome. Fruit and vegetable crops are often the target for these hungry insects. Insecticides are one way to get rid of these worms, especially on large crops. In smaller backyard gardens, the worms can be hand picked off and destroyed.
Rodents and other Pests – There are a number of rodents that would like to make their home in your garden.
1. Moles make a mess of your garden and disrupt the root systems of plants. Moles leave unsightly mounds of dirt on your lawn as they push up from underground. To rid your garden of moles you can try mole traps and repellents or even poisons. 2. Deer in the garden is a big problem. They do a lot of damage but can be easily deterred from your yard by planting foliage they don’t want to eat. If deer are a problem for you, go to your local nursery and find out about deer-resistant plants, (for example, perennial groundcovers). 3. Squirrels can get into bird-feeders which can be a problem in your garden if you are trying to attract birds. If squirrels have invaded your patch, get a squirrel-proof bird feeder. 4. Rats and mice are common visitors in any garden. Cats and barn owls are a good way to keep these pesky rodents at bay. Keeping your compost heap free from meat refuse and your woodpile tidy will also discourage these pests. Scatter mothballs around the perimeter of garden beds. Rats don’t like the smell and will stay away. 5. Rabbits like to visit gardens as well. Surround your vegetable patch with chicken wire for a good deterrent against rabbits.
If you have pests and rodents in your garden and need help getting rid of them, seek advice from a professional. You want to get rid of them quickly and effective so you can go on enjoying your garden.
