Formal Garden or English Garden - Tips for Choosing your Garden Style

There are a number of different styles of garden you can choose to implement. Choosing a style that suits you will depend on a number of factors:

1. How much space do you have?
2. What will your garden be used for - entertaining, children's play area, quiet oasis for reflection?
3. How much time do you have to maintain your garden?
4. What is your budget? Is it enough to achieve the style you want?
5. Do you want a particular color theme in your garden?
6. What plants do you already have that may be implemented into your garden design?

Once you have answered these questions you can investigate the different styles of gardens around and see if any suit your needs and your tastes.

Formal Garden: This is a garden that encompasses straight lines in a symmetrical layout. Perfect geometrical shapes are used when planting. Planting is not random, but structured. High maintenance with regular pruning is required for the Formal Garden to keep its shape and effect. Walks and paths can be incorporated successfully into this style of garden.

English Garden: An English Garden can have a formal or informal layout. English Gardens are full of mass plantings of perennials and shrubs. Lawns surrounded by garden beds, hedges and gates depict this style. Natural planting of trees and shrubs is encouraged. You will also find abundant and flourishing blooms. There are never too many flowers in an English garden! This is a high maintenance garden.

Cottage Garden: Crowded displays of flowers run rampant is a fair description of this low maintenance garden! This style of garden suits most conventional houses and uses a combination of roses, old-fashioned annuals, perennials, wild flowers and native trees and shrubs.

Woodland Garden: This garden is designed to blend in with existing trees and is a more shaded type of garden. Plants in a Woodland Garden prefer shade and partial sun. Meandering paths can be found here as well as water, natural stone and wood features. The design is subtle and the maintenance not overly high.

Contemporary Garden: These gardens are minimalist in style and therefore don't need a lot of plants. Contemporary Gardens suit the modern home and uses strong shapes and textures for emphasis. Maintenance is low.

Mediterranean Garden: For hotter climates this earthy garden works well. Courtyards can be the focus with earthenware pots of flowers and small shrubs used to advantage. Flowers are vibrant against the natural tones. This is a low maintenance garden, but can be expensive to create.

Once you have decided on your needs and the style of garden you want, you can go about creating your special garden. There are other styles of garden you may wish to investigate. Make sure you find the right one for you.
