Five Beautiful Accent Ideas for your Garden

Five Beautiful Accent Ideas for your Garden

What is a garden accent? It is something, usually inanimate, added to your garden for beauty and enjoyment. It can be a statue, a water feature, a piece of art. It all depends on your taste and your garden style as to what will look best in your garden. Here are five ideas to get your started:

1. Statues – from enormous Grecian statues of cherubs spouting water to small, carefully placed figures among the foliage, statues can add much beauty and interest to your garden. You may like to go with a theme of fairy creatures or funny garden gnomes. Many statues are works of art. Wire and steel creations are popular, as well as stone statues. Turn a corner in some gardens and you may meet a life-sized steel ostrich or next to the bench may be a wire cat with intriguing eyes.
2. Wooden structures – these can be garden arbors or gazebos. Garden arbors are used for trellising. They provide support for vines or climbers to grow over and create a certain ‘look’ in your garden. Trellises can be made into rose arches, wisteria screens or whatever functions you want or need in your garden. Gazebos can take the form of an outdoor room. Situated in the right place they will add beauty to your garden and a place of interest to discover. This can be just the spot to take an afternoon tea break; enjoying the shade of the structure while you admire your garden.
3. Benches - placing benches in certain sites around your garden will invite places for quite reflection or reading. Place them near shade or where birds congregate, perhaps near a water feature. Benches can be made from wood or stone, roughly hewn or traditionally constructed. A love seat by the butterfly bushes or cedar bench in amongst the shade will be a beautiful addition to your garden.
4. Water features – From the simple birdbath, to the pond with a cascading waterfall, water features abound! Everyone loves the sound of running water and the garden is a natural place to put a water feature. Birds will come to drink from your water features and visitors will be drawn to the restful sounds of water burbling over stones. You may wish to add fish to your pond. Perhaps frogs and other wildlife will come to enjoy this accent in your garden.
5. Pots – The best thing about pots is that you can change their look by varying the plants year to year and you can move them around the garden to take advantage of the winter sun and summer shade as required. If you have a Mediterranean style garden then terracotta pots are a must. Fill them with bright, vibrant flowers and place them in eye-catching places around the garden. You can get creative with your pots and paint or put mosaic tiles on them.

Enjoy the accents you bring to your garden!
