Easy Ways to Add a Water Feature to your Garden
Water features are a welcome addition to any garden. They invite birds and other wildlife and provide a relaxing environment for any garden visitor, people included! However some water features look like they need professionals to install, but there are those that are easy to introduce into your garden.
Birdbaths – a very simple water feature. You can make one yourself if you have any shallow basins that would be appropriate. Birds don’t like deep water therefore the bath should only be a few inches in depth. Place some large stones on the base of the bath for smaller birds to alight on and use the water. Birdbaths can be purchased from the nursery and are not necessarily expensive. Situate the bath near your bird attracting plants, where cover is available for the birds to drink and bathe in peace.
Tub or container water gardens – these water features are easy to create and consist of a container, a pump and a fountain head. You need to place this garden by an electrical outlet for the pump to run. Select the container you want to use for your water garden. Obviously, it must be able to hold water. The container should be around one to three feet deep and one to two feet in width. The pump is placed in the water in the container and once connected, switched on. The fountain head will be connected to the top of the pump. Conceal the pump with stones and watch the watch bubble over. Add water plants to complete this water feature. The plants will keep the water fresh, which means mosquitoes will not be a concern around this garden.
Ponds – a process is involved in putting together your backyard pond. You can purchase a pond-making kit to make the job easier. Design a pond that will suit your garden and check for underground wiring in the place you want to put it. Don’t put the pond under a tree otherwise you’ll be cleaning it often! Dig the hole to accommodate the liner, ensuring the liner fits tightly and is level. At this stage you may want to add a waterfall to this garden feature. Kits are available to make this easier too. Now develop your pond with rocks, pebbles, water lilies – whatever you want in your water feature. You may even want to add fish to your pond.
Developing your water features has been made easier with the introduction of do-it-yourself kits. Check them out at your local nursery and enjoy the process of adding a water feature to your garden.
